Us brits are now finding ourselves outclassed and outsized by our American cousins and the highly frosted cup cake! Then again is it just a matter of the language divide or does size really matter?

Man fined £3000 for eBay auction fixing

This week the BBC reported that for the first time a man has been convicted of Shill Bidding on eBay. What's shill bidding you ask ( well I did)! Shill bidding is when someone bids on their own item or get friends or family to bid the price of items up for them. This artificially inflates the price.

Paul Barrett a minibus hire firm boss pleaded guilty after being investigated by Trading Standards. They found that he had bid against himself on several items including a pie and pasty warmer on sale for £127. He claimed that he didn't know that shill bidding was illegal. He has been fined £3000 and ordered to complete 250 hours of community service after being convicted in April.

eBay spokeswoman Vanessa Canzenni denies that not enough is being done to prevent shill bidding.
"The fact that we're the number one e-commerce site proves that customers can buy and sell with confidence." Critics of eBay say that shill bidding is a widespread problem on the site.

Sounds silly I know, but there is so much discounting about these days I'm beginning to wonder what I should be paying, and if this is their way of compensating me for ripping me off for a box of '2-in-1washing powder' for the past 4 years.

The high street is shouting at me 'BUY 1, GET 1 HALF PRICE' or 'BUY 1, GET 1 FREE'.

BOGOF I say! Just gimme one item reasonably priced please and donate the money your wasting on a national ad campaign to a good cause like Demelza House!

The way prices are being slashed these days indicates just how much mark-up high street retailers are making on luxury goods and consumables like my '2-in-1' The credit crunch has left many shoppers like myself seeking about best deals and bargain sites to make my pound stretch that little bit further, so I have to put my hands up to partly fueling this discount frenzy.

But as an independent online gift retailer, I work on very tight margins in a very competitive marketplace, I rely on return customers, so I need to give Boudoir Babe customers the best possible products and service at very competitive prices otherwise I can say goodbye to repeat customers. I also run gift incentive promotions throughout the year as a thankyou for their continued custom, but I draw the line at cheap impulse buying tricks. Perhaps that's because I simply can't compete with major retailers, as I don't have their purchasing power or partly because I only need one box of "2-in-1 washing powder" thank you very much.

This months blog post picks up on an article I read in the Telegraph "Threat to Marks & Spencer's no-quibble refund" which was seen as the retail benchmark for excellent customer service. However the changing economic climate could see M&S lower the bar!

I had my first customer refund last week, not bad for 3 years of running an online gift shop. "No worries, simply post it back to me and I'll refund your money", I said. Sounds simple doesn't it? It was easy because my customers are aware of our 28 day refund policy.

I went onto Money Savings Expert, as you do, to gauge how shoppers feel about refund policies and the general consensus is people are prepared to travel a little bit further and pay a little more for peace of mind.

For many customers shopping online saves time and money, but forum posts suggest a small number of online shoppers still have a bugbear about paying reasonable postage costs which needs to cover post, packing and delivery options.

Sending small items by post is still the cheapest, secure and trackable door-to-door delivery service. Online gift shops like Boudoir Babe, Amazon, eBay, Bombay Duck and others rely heavily on this distribution method to send parcels safely and securely to our customers. Having a clear returns policy in plain English, removes any ambiguity, which hopefully means fewer unhappy customers.

Where am I going with this? For safe online shopping, buy with confidence. Online shoppers should be wary of buying from websites without a clear refund policy, especially when your coming up to the busiest period of the year for retail sales - online christmas shopping!

Going shopping next week for a posh wedding dress for a girlfriend who's getting married next Spring to Mr Right NOW (as they're on/off like a flippin' light switch). To save time, I invited Clarie (thats not her real name btw) round for drinks and a chat about what kind of posh wedding dress she had in mind. We spent a few hours surfing the internet and stumbled upon a UK wedding dress designer called Christina K.

Hmm we thought, the website ticked all the right boxes, so we rang the shop there and then. To my surprise it was Christina herself who answered the phone. She was really nice and gave us loads of free tips and advice on veils, shoes, tiaras and jewellery.

Boudoir Babe is exited (yup really exited) and we just had to let you know that we now stock a range of fantastic fairtrade gifts; photo albums and notebooks by Nkuku.

All Nkuku’s products are Eco-friendly, handmade and fairtrade. They are made using age old traditional techniques by skilled artisans in Africa and India. These skills combine extremely well with the contemporary designs, natural materials and sustainable methods of production.

Nkuku photo albums and notebooks are available in a range of different designs and sizes. All have acid free cotton fibre pages which are handmade from cotton rag left over from the clothing industry; the albums benefit from acid free interleaves and are supplied in a recycled paper cotton box which make them and ideal gift.

The leather for the albums and notebooks is all hand-dyed using tree bark and natural vegetable extracts. It is then left to dry in the sun, which brings out the lovely rich colours.

Whilst on a year travelling the world in 1989 John Ayris and Anne Spratling came across a family of highly talented artisans who were making the most charming products from paper wood and other natural materials found in and around their village. Siezing the opportunity laid before them both sides got down to some friendly bargaining, a small collection was bought, an idea sown and a promising relationship begun.

East of India was born when the Princes Trust provided a small loan in 1991.

Today those original artisans are still producing fabulous items for East of India, only now they employ other family members and friends to keep up with the demand. Thanks to you for your support in buying their wonderful gifts they are able to work together as family units and earn a living using traditional skills passed down from generations before them

East of India design all their own products, producing exclusivity and a cohesive look over the whole range. All products are designed around the extensive skills of the artisans making them and are the result of the close working relationship. East of India gifts are now also handmade in Britain as well as in other countries around the world.

East of India are based in Folkestone, Kent. Their team has evolved and grown since 1991. Boudoir Babe has come a long way from it's origins on Ebay to a smart new online gift shop in fashionable World Wide Web. The new shop boasts the exciting addition of a section dedicated to gifts under £10, £25, £50 and gifts under £100 as well as a bargain bin, what's new and top selling gift ideas. The offering is a contemporary and eclectic mix of handbag accessories, gifts, designer jewelry, garden gift accessories and children's toys.

So how and when did the idea for an online gift shop all come about?
The business was founded in 2001. At this point I sold children's gifts . The business has naturally evolved.
Where did the name Boudoir Babe originate from?
Boudoir Babe was the name of a feature article in a glossy magazine and the name stuck in my head ever since.
Do you come from retail or gift industry background?
No, but my business partner was originally in retail marketing which isn't far removed from the gift marketplace. While I'm a shopaholic with an eye for a bargain, so we make a good team.
What grabs your attention when looking for new gift ideas?
I want to be excited! As a buyer, I'm looking for quirky, fun and unusual gifts that can't be found on the high street. Quality of the gifts I sell on Boudoir Babe is essential as bad quality reflects directly onto us as a business rather than the supplier.
How important is customer service?
I know everybody bangs on about the importance of good customer service, but few seem to follow through on it :-(

Some people love them, and some people hate them. I’m sort of in the middle. Retailers like boudoirbabe considering a 'gift with purchase' incentive (GWP) should think carefully.

GWP promotions can be very effective when it comes to:-

Launching a new product
Increasing product sales
Raising brand awareness

Choosing an appropriate incentive that will either complement, enhance or add value to the purchased item is really important for a small business on tight margins.

However I've noticed that many BIG online retailers seem to use it as an excuse to get rid of crap they can't sell or simple don't want :-(

I like GWP promotions as much as the next woman for certain shops. However the cynic in me wonders if anything given away by a big company is of any value. If a major retailer is giving away something for nothing, then you can bet they're making the money back on something else.

What about Customer Loyalty, I hear you ask?
As a small business owner selling niche market gifts in a very competitive market, I try to see my business from a customers point of view. I want to reward customers who buy gifts from BoudoirBabe and recommend my online gift shop because they like the gifts we sell and because they've enjoyed the shopping experience.

Selling Someone Once Doesn't Make Them A Loyal Customer
